Vegard K.Holum – BIO

Born in Volda, September 1985 and raised on the west coast of Norway in a small town called Fosnavåg. Grew up in a music-family and were introduced to a wide spectre of music early on. After a short relationship with the violin he picked up the cornet at the age of 9, and joined the local marching band 2 years later. Soon he advanced to different youth big bands and brass bands. At the age of 15 he joined ”Jazzlogen”, a annual jazz-parade band who played every morning on the jazzfestival Molde Jazz. During this time he also picked up the piano and the guitar, and started a local punk-band where he first started making his own compositions. Because of his extensive cultural involvement in his home-town he received ”The Youth Culture Prize” in 2003.

In 2005 he attended a year of music education at ”Toneheim Folkehøgskole” in Hamar. After working with improvisation and composition this year he were accepted into The University of Agder in Kristiansand to take a bachelor degree in Rhythmic Music in 2006. Here he studied trumpet with Tore Bråthen and Kåre Nymark Jr, and also had classes and seminars with Petter Wettre, Jan Bang, Erlend Skomsvoll, Nils-Petter Molvær etc. After his bachelor he took a year with further-education in composition with Bendik Hofseth and Geir Holmsen. During his time in Kristiansand he formed various ensembles and arranged music for numerous settings. Amongst others he arranged music for Christiansand Bigband and their CD “Gym”.

In 2010 he moved to Oslo to attend The Norwegian Academy of Music for further-education in both pedagogics and live electronics. Here he formed “Holum Trio” who developed original music with a blend of improvisational elements and melodic pop. They release their debutalbum “Heim” in January 2015. During his time in Oslo he has done numerous freelance-work including studiosessions, television, horn-sections, arranging and workshops. In August 2014 he starts his master´s degree, “Nordic Composer”, at The Norwegian Academy of Music.
